May Event 2012:Invaluable Techniques for Teaching English to Kids Under the Age of 10

Description:

Are you new to kids teaching, needing some inspiration for an existing program or looking to start? Four veterans (see below) of teaching English to kids under 10 demonstrate a variety of invaluable activities and techniques that are easy to implement & pedagogically sound. Watch, learn, use it on Monday!

The format is a MyShare format: 10 minute presentations/demonstrations, each with time for Q&A to follow. The language will be English with some non-native Japanese.

Social Event to follow: Cheese and Wine/Beer (500 yen), followsdirectly from the final presentation.

Venue: English-Please! Natural Conversation School, Kashihara (5 mins from Yamato Yagi Station.

Lisa Manhart has been the owner and teacher at English Square in Takatsuki since  2002 where she teaches from babies to adults.  She specializes in incorporating music activities into children’s lessons.

Short Presentation 2 : Catherine Littlehale Oki : Easily Adaptable Activities

See activities that can be easily adapted depending on students levels. You’ll see new and old (shared at Nara JALT last year) ideas that have proven effective for both fun and communication in the YL classroom.

Catherine Littlehale Oki is a teacher and materials writer for children ages 0-12. She teaches at Modern English and Notre Dame Elementary School in Kansai and has her MA in Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL).

Learn how to create and administer ‘reading sheets’.  Though primarily aimed at building reader confidence, see how this simple technique helps young learners increase their proficiency in all 4 skills.

Short Presentation  4 : Catriona Chalmers : David Lisgo: Livening Up Phonics.

Catriona will be introducing some of David Lisgo’s many materials, games and workbooks, and demonstrating how they can be effectively used to enhance an existing phonics course.

Catriona Takeuchi lives in Nara and is the owner/operator/one- woman band at ONE WORLD, a children’s conversation school in Ikoma.  Catriona has been teaching English conversation for over 22 years.
